Caffeine? Bean there, done that! Looking for a little lift without the caffeine kick? You’re in good company. Caffeine-free alternatives are having a moment, giving you a gentle boost without sending you into overdrive. And with several tasty options in the colourful SONNENTOR range, there’s plenty to perk you up. Let’s take a closer look.
Lupin fake coffee
Our newest addition to the range keeps things beautifully simple: roasted white lupin seeds and nothing else. Brew them up and you’ve got an intriguing coffee alternative for anyone who likes discovering something new in their cup.
Lupin coffee is pleasantly malty, with a subtle bitterness and delicate, grain-like notes. This gives it a character all of its own and sets it apart from our other coffee alternatives.
For one cup of lupin coffee, use 200 ml of boiling water and 2 teaspoons, or about 9 g, of lupin coffee. There are several ways to prepare your perfect cup: For a French press, simply pour over with hot water, give it a quick stir and let it steep for 4–6 minutes before slowly pressing down the plunger. When using a moka pot, fill the bottom chamber with water and add the lupin coffee to the filter basket – then simply wait for the coffee to rise. For a Chemex, briefly rinse the filter with hot water, add the lupin coffee and slowly pour over. A filter coffee machine works just as well: Simply add the lupin coffee to the filter and start the machine as usual. And just like that, your wonderfully malty, slightly grainy cup of lupin coffee is ready to enjoy.
dandelion root fake coffee
For years, one of our most popular varieties has been our roasted dandelion root coffee. Dandelion? You heard that right. Because it’s not just the leaves of this versatile plant that deserve a place on the menu — its roots can be roasted and brewed into a delicious coffee alternative, too.
So, what does a freshly brewed cup of dandelion root coffee taste like? We’d describe it as wonderfully aromatic and pleasantly malty, with a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity. But, of course, the best way to find out is to try it for yourself! Fancy a little extra? Add a splash of (plant-based) milk, a drizzle of honey or a pinch of cardamom.
For one cup of dandelion coffee, use 1–2 teaspoons of dandelion root coffee, depending on how strong you like it. There are several ways to prepare your perfect cup: For a French press, simply pour over the coffee and let it steep for 5–10 minutes before slowly pressing down the plunger. When using a Chemex, briefly rinse the filter, add the dandelion coffee and slowly pour over. For a moka pot, simply add the dandelion coffee to the filter basket and wait for the coffee to rise. Preparing dandelion coffee with a tea filter is just as easy: Simply add the dandelion coffee to the filter, pour over with hot water and let it steep for a few minutes. For a filter coffee machine, add the dandelion coffee to the filter and start the machine as usual. And just like that, your wonderfully aromatic, pleasantly malty dandelion coffee is ready to enjoy.
spelt fake coffee
For those moments when you're in a hurry or simply don’t have your usual coffee gear to hand our Faux Coffee also comes in an easy-peasy instant version. It’s made from roasted spelt, which gives the drink its pleasantly malty flavour with a delicate nutty note.
And making it couldn’t be easier: simply add 1 teaspoon per cup, pour over hot water, give it a stir and your spelt coffee is ready to enjoy. Mild, mellow and wonderfully fuss-free, it’s also a great choice for children.
so, what's wrong with it?
There’s actually nothing “wrong” with our coffee alternatives — quite the opposite. While they’re completely caffeine-free, they certainly don’t compromise on flavour. Rich, aromatic and pleasantly malty, they offer all the depth and character you’d expect from a classic cup of coffee.
And there’s more: our dandelion coffee is also gluten-free. So whether you don’t drink coffee at all or simply want to cut back on caffeine, there’s a delicious alternative waiting to be discovered.
